What You Need (Almost Nothing)
You don't need a barre. You don't need a studio. Here's what actually helps — and what to use instead.
A Chair or Countertop
Any sturdy chair back or kitchen counter works. You'll rest one hand on it for balance during standing work. It doesn't need to be fancy — it just needs to not tip over.
A Yoga Mat or Towel
For floor work and stretching. A yoga mat is ideal but a folded towel or carpet works fine. You need padding for your knees and something non-slip for your feet.
Light Weights (Optional)
1–3 lb dumbbells for arm work. Water bottles or cans of soup work perfectly as substitutes. Many classes don't use weights at all. Your instructor will tell you what you need before class.
Grip Socks or Bare Feet
Barre is done barefoot or in grip socks — never in shoes. Grip socks have rubber nubs on the bottom to prevent sliding. Bare feet on a yoga mat works equally well for home practice.
A Device with a Camera
Laptop, tablet, or phone. Position it so your instructor can see your full body from head to toe. A laptop on a table or a phone propped against books works. The bigger the screen, the easier it is to follow along.
A Stable Internet Connection
Enough bandwidth for a video call — the same connection you use for FaceTime or Zoom calls at work. Wi-Fi is fine. You don't need anything special.
What to Expect in Your First Class
Here's what a typical 45-minute live virtual barre class looks like, start to finish.
Log On and Say Hello
Click the video link your instructor sent. Turn your camera on and position it so your full body is visible. Your instructor will greet you, ask about any injuries or limitations, and check your camera angle.
Warm-Up
Gentle movements to get your body ready. Shoulder rolls, arm reaches, pliés in first position. Your instructor is already watching your alignment and may offer your first correction here. Don't be surprised — that's the whole point.
Arms and Upper Body
Small, controlled movements with light weights or no weights. High reps, low range of motion. This is where you'll start to feel the burn. Your instructor will cue: "Lift an inch. Lower an inch. Hold." Your arms will shake. That's normal.
Thighs, Glutes, and Barre Work
This is the signature barre section. One hand on your chair for balance. Pliés, leg lifts, pulses, tucks. Small movements that feel enormous. Your instructor watches your hips, knees, and alignment and corrects you in real time.
Core and Floor Work
Down to the mat for ab work, planks, and targeted glute exercises. Your instructor may use a ball or towel (or tell you to grab one). Expect precise cueing about pelvic position and spine alignment.
Stretch and Cool Down
Deep stretching for every muscle group you just worked. This is where the flexibility gains happen. Your instructor will check your form on stretches too — most people stretch incorrectly without realizing it. Class ends with a brief check-in.
Common Questions
How much does a live virtual barre class cost?
Each instructor sets their own pricing. Most classes range from $12 to $30 per session. Some instructors offer introductory rates for first-time students or package discounts for multiple sessions. Pricing is always visible on the instructor's profile before you book.
Do I need any experience with barre or dance?
Absolutely not. Barre is designed for all fitness levels. You don't need dance experience, flexibility, or any particular fitness baseline. Your instructor will modify exercises for your level and explain everything as you go. Many of our students are complete beginners.
Can I take a class while pregnant?
Yes — with an instructor who holds IBBFA's Prenatal & Postnatal specialty certification. These instructors are specifically trained in trimester-specific modifications, pelvic floor considerations, and exercises to avoid during pregnancy. Use the "Prenatal" filter on our instructors page to find a specialist. Always consult your healthcare provider before starting any exercise program during pregnancy.
What video platform do instructors use?
Most instructors use Zoom or Google Meet. A few use FaceTime or other platforms. Your instructor will send you a link before class — you just click it to join. No downloads or accounts are typically needed beyond what you already have.
How is this different from a recorded class on YouTube?
In a recorded video, nobody sees you. You could have terrible form for months and never know. In a live class, your instructor watches your specific movements and corrects your technique in real time. They'll tell you to drop your shoulders, engage your core, or modify an exercise for your body. That real-time feedback is the difference between exercising and actually improving.
What does "IBBFA Certified" mean?
Every instructor on barreworkout.com holds a credential from the International Ballet Barre Fitness Association (IBBFA). To earn this credential, they passed a written examination covering anatomy, technique, safety, and class design, plus a live practical evaluation observed by a Master Instructor. Their credentials are publicly verifiable at ibbfa.org/verify. IBBFA has certified over 7,000 instructors across 40+ countries since 2008.
Can I cancel or reschedule?
Each instructor sets their own cancellation and rescheduling policies. These are typically listed on their booking page. Most instructors allow free cancellation with 24 hours' notice. Check your instructor's specific policy when you book.
Is my camera really on the whole time?
Yes — that's the whole point. Your instructor needs to see your form to give corrections. You don't need to be camera-ready — wear comfortable workout clothes and don't worry about your hair.
